Free SIC & NAICS code classifier for insurance

Describe what a US business establishment primarily does. Get governed SIC 1987 and NAICS 2022 candidates with hierarchy, confidence, alternatives, provenance, and insurance-oriented review context.

Use non-confidential descriptions only. Results support classification and review; they are not government certification, coverage advice, or an underwriting decision.

Classify a business description

Load the free classifier when you are ready. The external demo will connect only after you choose to launch it.

Read the result correctly

A useful classification explains uncertainty instead of hiding it.

Separate SIC and NAICS candidates

See the code, title, hierarchy, taxonomy edition, and relationship without assuming the two systems are interchangeable.

Confidence and alternatives

Use the confidence band, decision state, alternatives, and warnings to decide when more context or human review is required.

Insurance-oriented context

Connect classification to reviewable risk, coverage, product, and Lloyd’s-sector candidates while preserving each layer’s provenance and limitations.

From tool to production

Put the same governed contract inside your workflow.

The public classifier is designed for exploration. The API adds authenticated requests, predictable JSON, idempotency, versioned taxonomy and enrichment records, operational limits, and integration support for insurance intake, appetite routing, referrals, reporting, and human review.

Method and boundaries

Classify the activity. Preserve the evidence.

Strong input states the establishment's primary activity, products or services, operating model, and customers. A legal name or broad label such as “consulting” is rarely enough to distinguish adjacent codes.

Facio keeps the original description, extracted facts, taxonomy edition, selected records, alternatives, confidence, relationship provenance, and review state together so another person can understand how the candidate was reached.

The US Census Bureau defines NAICS for statistical classification of establishments and publishes the official 2022 structure. SIC remains present in many commercial and insurance workflows, but its relationship with NAICS is not always one-to-one.

Insurance risk scores, coverage candidates, product references, and Lloyd's CR1298 sectors are separate enrichment layers. They must carry their own source, version, limitations, and review requirement rather than being presented as part of the official SIC or NAICS record.

Frequently asked questions

Before you use the result

How do I find a SIC or NAICS code from a business description?

Describe the establishment’s primary activity, including what it produces or provides, how it operates, and who it serves. The classifier compares that evidence with governed SIC 1987 and NAICS 2022 records and returns candidates with confidence and review context.

Is SIC the same as NAICS?

No. SIC and NAICS were designed separately and can relate one-to-one, one-to-many, or many-to-many. Facio classifies them independently instead of treating a crosswalk as an authoritative conversion.

Can I use the result for insurance underwriting?

The result can support intake, appetite routing, referrals, enrichment, and portfolio reporting. It is not an underwriting decision and should be reviewed with the business-specific risk facts required by your organization.

Does the tool return Lloyd’s industry sectors?

The wider Facio classification workflow can return review-required candidates from the Lloyd’s CR1298 industry-sector reference. These are a separate insurance context layer, not an official direct conversion from SIC or NAICS.

Can I send confidential application data?

No. The public demo is for non-confidential business descriptions. Do not enter personal information, customer records, policy data, credentials, or other sensitive material.

Need classification inside an insurance product?

Bring a representative description set, target taxonomies, review policy, expected volume, and the insurance context your workflow needs. We will test the production contract against them.
